To me, the early twentieth century when it comes to art, literature and music is the most exciting time in history. It was when the most creative people of this era pushed the boundaries and rules beyond breaking point. For doing this, they were laughed at by critics who declared they drew or wrote like children. Little did the critics know, that these creative people were the founders of modernism.
Saint Germain was the district in Paris, from 1900-1935, where all the poor artists, writers and musicians lived and created their masterpieces. Ernest Hemingway declared once that it was there, when he was at his poorest stage in life, it was also by far his happiest time.
Amongst these creative people was Gertrude Stein, who collected art with her brother in the early 1900’s, that other collectors dismissed as rubbish. Stein’s walls in her home, as a result, were covered from floor to ceiling with Matisse, Picasso, Braque and Cezanne paintings.
Because of her contemporary approach to art she became the mentor to these artists and was famous for her gatherings in the Stein home that brought together confluences of talent and thinking that would help define modernism in literature and art. Dedicated attendees included Pablo Picasso, Ernest Hemingway, F. Scott Fitzgerald, Sinclair Lewis, James Joyce, Ezra Pound, Thornton Wilder, Sherwood Anderson and Henri Matisse.
I didn’t want to capture the glamour of the early 1900’s, instead I wanted to capture the creative minds that struggled, whilst doing without food for days, but defied the odds and made their way into the history books and are people we will always look to for inspiration.
